Riverview High: The Musical - An awesome way to start the Fringe

Comedy, Musical Theatre, Queer, New Work- http://www.riverviewhighthemusical.com

Half an hour before the show started, the Firehall was already packed with an upbeat vibe. Everybody was ready to start this year's Vancouver Fringe Festival with a high note. Did this show deliver tonight?...yes it did!

The young ensemble performed song after song, progressively getting better as the show went on. I am sure they had butterflies in their stomachs while performing in front of a full house, but they hit each note and each step with success. Every performer brought their character to us and  the audience got to know them quickly, attached ourselves to them and their adolescent plight.

The characters themselves are loosely based on a popular comic book that everyone has read at least once in their life. Think about it: a high school red haired guy who has on one hand - a blonde, down-to-earth girl and on the other a rich, sexy brunette. There are little Easter eggs (Easter egg = hints at)  in the show from said comic, which gave an additional boost to it. The performers on stage most importantly made the characters their own, so if you don't catch the subtle nods it doesn't take away from the experience.

I recommend this show to everybody.

I haven't mentioned anything specific except the Easter egg/comic comment above because I don't want to spoil anything. It is a fun, iddy-biddy-cheesy & cute hour and a half with strong emotional moments in between. The cast themselves (including the live band in the back) did an awesome job. Dancing, choreography and the singing were great.  Kudos to you all.  I am not going to compare it to anything (like Glee or even Grease to a certain extent) because it has its own flavour to it but if anyone out there likes Glee or Grease or good  musicals then you have to go see Riverview High: The Musical.

Now, if you really want to know more about the show, go to their website! This production has on their website a vlog (video blog) so you can get a sneak peek at some of the characters and hear just a bit of the music. (BTW, video blogs aren't just for dem minecraft/skyrim playthroughs you know, so good on them for using tech to promote their stuff...)

Also available at the Firehall venue is the audio/music recording of the show for purchase($20). I am sure it will be sold out in no time.

I really like it. Thanks you guys for an awesome start to the Fringe.
