An Evening With Satan - Could’ve Involved More Alcohol

New Work

While God wrote the Bible to share his story, Satan, to disclose his side of things, decided to star in his own theatre production. Produced by Punctuate! Theatre, “An Evening with Satan” is a charming cocktail discussion (sans your own cocktail, which is a shame) with The Fallen Angel himself.

You'll learn all about his unrequited love for Eve, his daddy issues and how fun the dark side can be.

Trying to weave together the varied and innumerable mythologies involving Satan, the script, written by Elliot James, does lose its path once or twice, but the be-horned James, (now as performer) does a killer job of keeping the audience engaged, whether by throwing a tantrum, having a female audience member bite an apple or asking the audience, by a show of hands, who’s partaken in pre-martial sex. The contrasting ease and temper Elliot brings to the character are convincing and make the show. Not to say the performance by Elizabeth Hobbs (performer and director) was dull, not in the least. I’ve never seen someone wear a lava red priapism in quite the same way.

With the casual nature of the show it was nice to be in the intimate space of Studio 1398, but the show would’ve benefited from a cabaret or club setting with a little less formal theatre seating and maybe even access to a bar. Regardless, “An Evening with Satan” is a clever portrait of Western society’s most despised villain and is simply a fun night of theatre, which is exactly what you’d expect from Satan.
