The Enquiry Office

Translator's note: A nondescript woman walks into a railway enquiry office, unaware that she is about to enter a kafkaesque situation which is going to change her life dramatically. By the time she walks out again she has become a victim burdened with the whole destiny of Man/Woman, ripe for destruction by pitiless forces beyond his/her comprehension. The Official evolves from a caricature of the 'uncivil servant' to a lyrical prophet of doom. What began like a concert-party sketch ends as a parody of tragedy.

Duration: 60 minutes

A high school boy muses on life, boredom and the pursuit of happiness in 'My Little Town' where “nothing ever happens” and where the grownups seem to like it that way. Something finally does happen and he meets a stranger and goes on a journey leading to self-discovery… or self destruction? Funny, poignant, vulnerable and scary. In Tow examines the possibilities that come when life takes an unexpected turn and all you have to rely on is what you’ve always expected. “Sometimes a tow truck driver is just a tow truck driver. And sometimes not.”

This is Jacques 22nd annual Fringe, in a show which Ryga himself described as "a gift to the long, long line of musicians, raconteurs and folk custodians of memory." "And that", says Director John Taylor, "makes it pretty much a perfect fit for Jacques.

“Did she or didn’t she? That’s what they all ask when they think I’m not listening.” Elizabeth struggles on the margins of sanity, on the dreamlike boundary between fantasy and reality, as she attempts to come to terms with her past. Issues of identity, history and the meaning of love, desire and relationship are examined as Elizabeth plumbs her dreams and memories for clues to where she is and what has happened to her. Sometimes poetic and dreamy and sometimes tragic, this woman’s story is every woman’s story. Or is it?
