You are an extra. Your call time is 8:30pm, location the Picnic Pavilion. You are handed a costume consisting of a hood made from a black garbage bag and a plastic mask. You are working for a cookie. They are making a movie, or trying to anyway. Is it high art? Is it porn? Can it be both?

In what very well may be the most interesting BYOV (Bring Your Own Venue) performance of this year's Fringe Festival, performer Phoebe Vlassis draws the audience/visitors/acquaintances? into her room. Then, through storytelling, she draws us into her life and decisions about her future.

It’s a lot to cram into 30 minutes but the pacing isn’t at all rushed and the small room expands to Greece and London and Spain and New Orleans and a room overlooking Pender Street in Vancouver’s Chinatown. Actually the rain was perfect. The black umbrellas thoughtfully provided by the production crew framed the story with an appropriately funereal atmosphere. And having to peep around the umbrella of the person in front of me made me feel a bit voyeuristic, like I really was witnessing the intimate details of someone else’s life.

I’m not sure about the choir. They were a good plot device in that they caught us up to speed on the action, which wasn’t really necessary, and the allowed for the actors to change, which really was necessary. It just felt a bit...

Don’t invite yourself. It started pleasantly enough. Coyote (Kaylin Metchie) met us at the edge of the playing space and invited us in to the House of Raven, recommending which seat we should take. Coyote explained some of the customs and expectations of us as invited guests in Raven's home. Raven (Ridley Wallace) arrives shortly thereafter and begins to tell his story of how he created the Earth and man. He never gets to complete his story however because he is rudely interrupted by Morgan (Leonie Armstrong) who appears nosily on his doorstep and demands to be...
