Wanderlust: hilarious odyssey

Wanderlust

With a lust to wander, and a desire to connect to an evasive, possibly illusory, principle of universal truth, Martin Dockery takes his audience on a dynamic, fast-paced, quirky, and hilarious odyssey through the trials and tribulations of independent travel through West Africa.

Wanderlust is a thoroughly engaging experience.

Leaving his supposedly temporary job in a tiny cubicle at the New York Stock Exchange, for fear that the job may become permanent, the commitment-shy Dockery has set off on an adventure that will capture the attention of everyone he tells about it upon his return.  Or he hopes.  He finds himself traversing the Sahara Desert in a fancy Land Rover with a romantic Belgium couple, finding it difficult to connect to Africa at all until he lies down to sleep in the open and finds himself surrounded by a mysterious herd of goats.

The experiences pile up. Self-affirmation comes in the act of retrieving a pen from a two-bit thug, or accompanying a hip hop village kid performing for his grandmother. He is disheartened that his plunge into a stingray-infested ocean doesn’t bring the great epiphany he is hoping for and eventually finds meaning in the simple everyday connection to all those he has shared bits of his life with on his adventure.

Wanderlust is on as part of this year's Vancouver Fringe Festival. For more information go here.
