Rabbit Rabbit: walking a thin line

Why so serious?

Toronto: Rabbit Rabbit, part of the ongoing SummerWorks Festival real-time two hander could have been dull and contrived, but a grungy premise and a appetite for verbosity on the part of playwright Amy Lee Lavoie keeps it attention grabbing the whole way through.

The two characters (a sexually frustrated party clown and an under-aged prostitute in love with her pimp) walk a careful line between realism and absurdity that makes the tenderness of their interaction and the unapologetic nastiness of their conversation that much more enjoyable. Katie Swift deserves credit for her delightful and understanding performance as Britney, the thesaurus-spouting prostitute.
