MOM? - Is Marvelous

Fringe Description: Funny · Weird · Intimate

Generally, I don’t like clowns; there is something unnerving about a clown. And after a particularly tough Saturday this reviewer wanted nothing more than to head home and crawl into bed. But, instead, I headed on over to the east side and saw MOM?  And it was just what the doctor ordered – light, funny, skilled and infectiously joyful.

To begin there is just a blue box on top of a mountain. The literal box of clowns for which, I imagine the troupe gets its name. It is from this box that the clowns emerge to scatter the ashes of their dear departed mother. We, the audience, are fellow mourners.

There were, maybe, only five short sentences of dialogue – including “MOM?”  It is a show of sharp, beautifully-timed, elegant, physical comedy that displayed flexibility, trust, and incredible commitment and energy.

Lit with a simple spot or two, in just a couple square metres of space and aided by just a few props and their red noses Anna Sell, Laura Loy  and Jeff Desautels and their sibling alter egos Mango, Victoria and Frank create a marvel.

The trio is reminiscent of the Three Stooges but there work is more personal and moving. There is a depth to these clowns and with elements of existentialism MOM?  is more than slapstick without losing the lightness, playfulness and joy.  The description mentions a progression through the five stages of grief – I  didn’t see them clearly – but it didn’t affect my enjoyment.

The show was 30 minutes that went by way too quickly. I would have gladly stayed for a second act and am considering a repeat viewing. Box of Clowns deserves a much bigger audience. Go see them – you will be happier for it.  It is worth every penny just to hear the magic of Anna Sells delicious, giggly, cackle.

These clowns charmed me. These clowns I adore.
