Giant Invisible Robot: Wondering What's It All About

Giant Invisible Robot is an hour-long presentation by fabulous London, Ontario actor Jayson McDonald.
He got a standing ovation at the end of his opening show last Thurday evening.
I was surprised by the standing ovation since I was confused by Giant Invisible Robot. I did immediately realize that McDonald is an excellent performer and that the individual sections were marvelous.
I just couldn’t find a relationship between them until about half way through the performance. (There isn’t even a set to tie it together – there is Jayson McDonald and a chair. That’s it.)
Today I read a review of his show at the 2011 Winnipeg Fringe by Jill Wilson
The hour-long comedy/drama is essentially a collection of sketches….
Whewww…Now I got it…sorta..
Dear Reader - realize that this is not a linear piece of theatre and you will do much better than I, at entering it with openness and be able to see and hear and enjoy without troubling yourself about “What the hell is going on???”
I saw a sad angry boy - Russell -who became a sad angry man named Russell and his relationship with his only friend, Giant Invisible Robot (GIR) who was also conflicted.
GIR also was angry but wanted to be friends and he too, had to curb himself or he would kill Russell.
Nothing is stated in this show.. all is implied…
Near the end Russell, our the terribly conflicted protagonist, is threatened by a doctor.
He is asked if he likes his job (he sits in a room by himself and does something – you know it is boring and meaningless but not what it is) and he answers yes although he says GIR wrecks his work room “once a week”… and he smiled shrugging slightly.
He is told he must talk about GIR and his past family life or he will lose his job.
He does…and a brilliant devastating and comprehensible conclusion to the conflicted Russell, GIR and seemingly fractured show is reached.
This show will sell out … You will need to purchase your tickets ahead of time.
