CODA (Children of Deaf Adults)

Fringe Description: Funny · Intense · Tear-Jerker · Multicultural

Two Hands Productions presents CODA (Children of Deaf Adults). CODA weaves the tale, equal parts funny and poignant, of what it is like to be raised by parents both of whom are deaf.

Mark Murray plays Tim, a boy who yearns to be heard and hopes for a closer relationship with his mother.  He and his mother have difficulty communicating and do so mostly through his father, as his mother’s disease involves not only deafness but a slow loss of vision causing her understanding of another’s signing to be difficult.

Tim must learn to answer that age-old question that we all have to answer.

“The bane of my existence?” he says, “Tell me about yourself.”

Young performer Mark Murray is an engaging storyteller who smoothly switches between characters throughout.  Whether mother or father, friend or policeman with the help of director Lindsey Leonard, he brings them all to life in great detail.  His facial expressions are priceless.

CODA attempts to answer the question, if when reading lips one hears only one-third of what is being said, which part of “I love you” is the part that is gets through?
