Ancient Chinese Secrets of the Tao: great performance art

Ancient Chinese Secrets of the Tao

This 30 minute show at the False Creek venue consists of eight short pieces of performance art by a Hong Kong based husband and wife team.  The opening three dance pieces are modern dance representations of female and male using traditional style masks with a tai chi based piece synthesizing the two.  There are two pieces of amazingly beautiful demonstrations of sand painting with the use of a lightbox, videocam and projector.

The solo performer, Hoi Chiu, also performs a hip hop based piece with music from Ryan Kurylo as DJ produce.  An original traditional style song by Ivan Hui and Irene Choi is performed in Mandarin by Maggie Blue O'Hara (originally from Vancouver) who is also the show director and writer as well as being the performer's wife.  Her concept for the show is based on the Tao and its concepts of yin and yang and the intertwining of man and nature.  While there is no live dialogue during the show, the director and performer open a audience question and answer session afterwords.  This is great performance art  not to be missed by those who enjoy dance and the visual arts.

Ancient Chinese Secrets of the Tao is on as part of this year's Vancouver Fringe. For more information go here.
