The Untitled Sam Mullins Project - Elegant Storytelling

Sam Mullins is a true storyteller. In this show, staged at the Havana Theatre, he offers us a very structured performance. Though he told us that this performance was the most sick he's ever been onstage (laryngitis) and drank tea throughout, you wouldn't believe it. Mullins is well-trained and a seasoned performer.
We meet Mullins at his first stand-up comedy workshop in Victoria taught by a man who reminds him of Ace Ventura. To get the creative juices flowing, Ace Ventura requests that Mullins and his classmates take one minute to write down some personal truths. These “truths” will be used as the basis of comedy. Unfortunately, Mullins' truths are deemed WRONG – yet it's lucky for the audience because his four unsuitable truths become the basis for this Fringe performance.
Each of the four truths is related to a story from Mullins' life. His ability to extrapolate a whole story from a base truth is part of the elegance of this performance. We can appreciate the humanity of the person in front of us who is willing to share intimate stories in a simple, candid manner. The staging is simplicity itself (only a stool centre stage) – which is excellent for the Havana Theatre space with its 60 seats and narrow stage. It's the storytelling of Mullins that keeps us engaged throughout.
I know that Sam Mullins has been doing Fringe touring over the past few years but this is my first time seeing him. If you haven't yet experienced his storytelling, I suggest you consider checking this out.
