My Hole Life - Totally Worth the Rain

Genre Definition = Funny · Tear-Jerker · Intimate

Actually the rain was perfect. The black umbrellas thoughtfully provided by the production crew framed the story with an appropriately funereal atmosphere. And having to peep around the umbrella of the person in front of me made me feel a bit voyeuristic, like I really was witnessing the intimate details of someone else’s life.

I’m not sure about the choir. They were a good plot device in that they caught us up to speed on the action, which wasn’t really necessary, and the allowed for the actors to change, which really was necessary. It just felt a bit odd.

The write up describes the piece as a “journey of honest, simple love”. I couldn’t agree more. There was nothing flashy or groundbreaking about the content of this play, it was very boy meets girl storyline, but you don’t need to be complex to be true. The story was beautiful. The actors were just that: human and honest and simple. Their chemistry was amazing, the dialogue flowed and it was captivating. The arguments and relationship patterns the characters experienced were all too familiar and I caught myself nodding in agreement a few times. But it wasn’t heavy handed or over-explained. It was just sweet.

The only scene that didn’t flow was the one when the couple is older. The acting felt awkward, probably because it was the only age group they couldn't really relate to, and the writing felt clunky, like they were struggling to catch us up on the plot more than anything. But just in that one section. The monologue at the end, presumably around the same age, worked great. Other than that I loved it. A heart-warming piece.
