Dirk Darrow: NCSSI (Not Completely Serious Supernatural Investigator) - Ridiculous, Charming and Fun

Genre Definition: Funny · Silly · Weird

Dirk Darrow: NCSSI is a charming example of the unique hybrid of show that fits perfectly into a Fringe festival program offering up an equal mix of comedy and clairvoyant magic. One of this year's international offerings, Dirk Darrow has been a popular on the Fringe circuit and I can see why; the combination of comedy, magic, and film noir with a brief, self-deprecating, interlude of interpretive dance, it is hugely entertaining and a ton of fun.

Dirk Darrow is a circa 1930’s tough talking private detective who is trying to solve a murder (bum, bum, bum!). He is a fast talking, cigarette smoking, fedora wearing, pun spitting, gun toting gumshoe who enlists the audience to follow the trial of clues and solve the who, what, where, when and why of the crime so he can get back to his dame.

It is full of quick-witted fast-paced word play and tongue firmly in cheek cheesy puns that are sure to leave you laughing when not groaning.

But sitting back and enjoying the show is not an option. Utilizing some impressive (and corny) magic tricks Dirk Darrow relies on the audience to assist him reveal the clues and solve the crime. If you’re on the shy side I recommend sitting at the back of the house in clothing that blends with the seats in an effort to go unnoticed. All participants at the performance I attended were great sports and their willingness to play along helped the entire audience enjoy the show.

Tim Motley, a charismatic American-Australian with an amazing velvet voice, gives a slick performance in this entertaining one-man show.

Hailed as the ‘world's only one-man film-noir comedy magical mind-reading murder mystery’ it doesn’t fail to deliver. A perfect start to my 2013 Fringe experience I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I highly suggest you don’t miss it.
