My Mother's Lesbian Jewish-Wiccan Wedding

It's hard to find photos of Jewish Wiccan weddings

Between the title My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish-Wiccan Wedding, and the Fringe’s history of generating contrived and off-the-wall musicals, you would never suspect that this show is based on a real life story.

Even more of a pleasant surprise is that a tender, loving, and entertaining tale is contained within. The story of David Hein’s mother’s relocation to Ontario and her subsequent discovery of her true sexual orientation is delivered in part through Hein’s songs which are fun and hummable, but exude the maturity of a well seasoned songwriter. It would have been easy for a show with such potential for parody to veer into the territory of kitsch and camp, but Hein maintains an earnest mood – tossing in just enough bawdy humour to keep things lively. This musical with meaning manages to move the audience without preaching to the choir.

My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish-Wiccan Wedding continues to July 12th as part of the Toronto Fringe, you can find out more here
