The Husband-Hunting Monologues - It Make Good Show. Watch, You See!

Comedy, Monologue, All Ages

Sylvestre wants a husband. This funny, sad, often silly woman thought her troubles were over when her cousin sent her in a crate as a mail-order bride to a Canadian man. Sadly, her groom-to-be died as she emerged from the box, so she must keep searching for the man who will complete her life.

The premise makes for a very engaging and entertaining show. The Husband-Hunting Monologues of Sylvestre Kolyaichic is often amusing, occasionally hilarious and – just when you least expect it – heart-breakingly sad. But Sylvestre’s broken speaking style, a pastiche of Eastern European pidgin English, helps ensure that even the most tragic moments are buffered by unintentionally silly puns and double-entendres.

As with many Fringe shows, this performance often breaks that fourth wall, with Sylvestre often trying to entice various audience members to propose. Indeed, at the beginning of the show, she is quite clear about her intentions: “If during Sylvestre talking man agree be husband, show over. OK?”

Despite the character’s single-minded obsession, she does evolve as she reveals more and more of her story. Ultimately, her realization is as cathartic for the audience as for herself.

As Sylvestre herself might say, “Please come to Monologues show. Is funny and sweet like baby sheep. Bring man friend or woman friend, but man friend very important. Big important!”
