DOES THIS TURN YOU ON? - Clowns and Sexual Gratification

Comedy, Cabaret, Clown, New Work - Valour & Tea Productions

I once heard the difference between tragedy and comedy described as “Oh my god I’m going to die” and “holy crap, I’m going to mutherf*cking die waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa”

I’m not a huge fan of red nose white nose clown work.  It’s incredibly hard stuff to pull off – even folks with the history of Mump and Smoot or Thwacked fail from time to time.  The gibberish and bigness that come along with it require huge stakes and mammoth obstacles that, when without, just fall flat.

Here a pair of female clowns are looking for sexual gratification.  Unable to find it, they try a series of kinks that range from blindfolds to loud noises and human furniture, inflicting them on each other in turn.

This is a fun idea that doesn’t manage to fly.  The need itself is never explored or established leaving it vague with neither character seems to actually having the life and death stakes needed to bring it to comedy.    Additionally the partners don’t seem to put out when having things tried out on them – neither diving in full force and trying to the best of the abilities or resisting to their utmost.   The result is none of the levels of sexual gratification or the ridiculousness that we go through for it make it to the stage.

There are a few laugh-out-loud moments as one clown crawls through the audience checking them out, an audience participation moment where an audience member joined in quite happily and a delightfully vulgar food sequence.  I won’t spoil the final solution, but it made me laugh too.

This is a good idea that needs to go further.
