DANCE RESPONSE - Writing about 7th Sense

Dancers from Wen Wei Dance

When I think of what I saw watching 7th Sense, I remember the dancers in clear spacial patterns, their black clothing with white trim, the white stage, and fabric columns hanging upstage a few feet from the back drop.  The dancers moved with a dynamic and expansive aesthetic that was often stationary when not moving in tangent with other dancers, they had articulation through the limbs, and used a lot of isolation.  I remember seeing horizontal lines in the spacial arrangements with the dancers and a lot of elevation during the partner work.  The stage was clean and straight forward with a white flooring, black fabric columns and black back drop.  I remember the lighting accenting the columns when the dancers moved between the fabric and back drop, and several specials including a square of light on centre stage and a rectangular highlight on stage left used for solos.

What I remember hearing was electronic based, ambient sound that ranged in volume and tone.  There was a small amount of sound from the dancers as they interacted with the audience or the other performers while speaking in dog training commands such as sit, come, down.

In this work I felt I was being shown disciplined passion, preparation, and a struggle for control.  At times I felt disconnected from the performance, or at a loss for how to relate emotionally.  I felt a strong choreographed connection/repulsion relationship between the performers.
