Dr. Serenity Hawkfire’s Beyond BeingCompany: Suzanne Falter-Barnes LLC
Duration: 55 minutes
Studio 16
Join Dr. Serenity Hawkfire in this perfect parody of a New Age workshop. It’s Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding on wheat grass — a completely hilarious evening of very interactive theatre that freely mixes scripted material with improv. As audience members ‘begin’ the workshop, Serenity receives a message from God (a close personal friend), stating that a producer of the ‘Good Day Ahead’ network TV show may be in the audience… so she attempts to wow him. Eventually the entire workshop goes to hell as Serenity loses it amidst more and more outlandish moments of New Age hilarity.

blahblahBLAH - don't you see the irony?
This one was just . . . well . . . BAD!
I was perplexed that the audience seemed to miss the irony of it all as they willingly stood up, sat down & made ridiculous gestures, noises etc. at the command of Dr. S . . . just like any “workshop”.
C’mon people – this was supposed to be a spoof! The topic had so much potential, sadly lost with a performer who just didn’t seem to be in-to-it at last night’s performance. Applause was weak, the audience participants (planted?)obviously uncomfortable & the puns predictable.
I stayed for more than half, hoping it would get better; it didn’t. Glad I made it out in time to catch a mocha frap before closing.
intimate funny show
All the people here in Vancouver who are into this new age stuff should see this show, it’s a really funny spoof of that. The audience was small at the show i was at, but totally engaged.
Dr. Serenity Hawkfire
I’ve seen many Fringe acts, both in Canada and in the US, but nothing comes close to Serenity Hawkfire’s Beyond Being Workshop. I laughed myself silly, as did many others in the audience. Serenity did a great job of involving all of us in the wackiness of it all. What a great spoof of a new age workshop! I highly recommend this one!
I totally disagree with this
I totally disagree with this review. The audience plants totally backfire, stating too obviously what others are thinking: this is stupid. There’s awkward audience participation where one person stood up on stage self-consciously while the performer sang to her. Pass on this one.
Dr. Serenity Hawkfire
Well, this show needs a larger audience to make it funny rather than awkward. I get what she’s trying to do (spoof the self-improvement gurus) but it falls flat. Audience members are part of the cast, and they do too good of a job of voicing their mock disapproval – to the extent that someone did actually walk out of the show tonight. The show needs to move a little faster. Some interesting ideas, work on it.
