Performance Works
Boom is a dynamic solo show that tells the tale of a sentimental bomb-maker’s tangled relations with the calculating denizens of his desperate hometown. "Extremely talented writer and performer Andrew Connor definitely gives you your money’s worth with Boom, a terrific piece of theatre that is literally and figuratively ‘the bomb.’" –New York Theatre “…sweet satire…” –The Seattle Weekly

It wasn't quite what I was
It wasn’t quite what I was craving though not to fault the show, it was my own dyslexic reading of the guide. Listed there as “theatre” my mind somehow read “drama.” Maybe a monologue along the lines of Timothy McVeigh? Not so. While I spent the first few minutes pondering the fact that I had walked into a comedy, after that it was a speed chase to keep up with all the changes of the characters. Was it an hour I wish I could get back. Not quite. It was a satire a la South Park and in the same way pure cartoon, one I’d like to see in animated form, especially little Rosa, grade school bomber. The world and characters are ready-made for transfer to that medium. I have seen Andrew Connor in the Cody Rivers Show and for my own taste I prefer his use of stillness in that version. I found my focus tested in this show. But if you are yet to see him you should go.
Hmm...
Okay so I feel the need to review every show I see – but literally – I was falling asleep during this show.
I could’ve been tired, but I also went to see another show about four hours later and didn’t fall asleep at all. I missed half of what was going on. Which I attribute not to a poor performance, but basically I felt the actor rushed through so much of his lines and while I was super impressed with how quick he changed up characters perhaps my brain just doesn’t switch gears that quickly.
But who knows…? Some people seemed to like it and everyone on the board seems to love it, so perhaps it’s just me…?
Boom
I’ve been following this actor since I saw Colossus by the Cody Rivers group several years ago. They are both very talented guys and this time Andrew gets to shine all on his own. He plays a dizzying amount of characters and the story is
very interesting to watch. I would suggest checking this one out.
Wow
Really quite an imaginative script and deftly brought to life by the generous and gifted Andrew Connor.
Why I Love Fringing
It is to witness and be a part of shows such as this that I Fringe every year. Andrew Connor’s Boom combines the talent, dark humour, social commentary and visual stimulus of great art. With a minimalistic set and props that physically contribute and symbolically strengthen (even through eclipse-like shadow) Connor embodies no less than 10 characters with incredible precision. Each rapid switch of character was clean, transitions were seamless and the portrayal simply perfect.
Boom is an unbelievable and wonderfully imaginative story. Connor’s performance had me laughing, pondering and worrying over the fate of characters I had known for less than an hour.
You owe it to yourself to see this show. Talent such as this is inspiring and electric.
